Lulu's Back In Town!

"Welcome Home Lulu!"
I must say, no matter how amazing one's travels may be, coming home after a long journey is the most wonderful thing!

As you know, I've spent the last few weeks halfway around the world, submerged in the fascinating culture of the Maasai people in Tanzania. As exciting as that was, last night, as the wheels of the plane touched down at the San Francisco International Airport, Tony Bennett's words filled my thoughts; "I left My Heart in San Francisco." Being fully aware of just how trite that sounds, I must confess that this is not the first time that song came to mind, nor will it be the last.
I love my city! Fortunately, that love is not unrequited! For, this morning, San Francisco welcomed me warmly and with open arms! Not only was I embraced by bright sunshine pouring through my window, but the sound of the trolley, and the hum of city life poured in as well! My city called to me and I answered with a smile on my face as I threw on my sneakers and ran down the stairs onto the bustling street. Even though it's the end of June, there is a crispness in the early morning air. I know just the thing! Just around the corner, there is a fabulous coffee shop. I'm a regular there and the owners, Sam and Mina, know my order before I speak it; Chili Cocoa with a generous portion of fresh whipped cream. Scrumptious!
Back in my apartment, my cocoa in hand, I sit at my somewhat cluttered desk. On the wall in front of me is a collection of keepsakes I have pinned up; pictures of friends, an opera program, movie ticket stubs, a few favorite quotes, and a "bucket list" I made a few years ago. I set the cocoa down and pin up a picture of me in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania; another memory to add to my collection and proof that I was the first Blythe doll to be introduced to the Maasai people there. Going to Africa wasn't actually on my bucket list, so I write it in, then put a checkmark next to it.
"What's next?," I say aloud.
I pick up my cocoa and take a sip, close my eyes and listen for inspiration. The window next to me is pushed wide open and I can feel a slight breeze. The hum of the city thrills me. I imagine that the hum didn't stop and await my return while I was on my trip, but carried on. Things are always happening here.
"What's next," I say again.
Then, after a few moments I can feel the edges of my lips turn up slightly.
I have an idea... and then another one.
Amused, my smile now grows into a full grin. I open my eyes.
"Yes. Perfect." I say, as I glance across the room and catch my reflection in the mirror.
I like the girl I see. In fact, the word resplendent comes to mind.
"Watch out world, Lulu's Back In Town," I say, and begin to hum a song by Fats Waller from 1935...
Long before my time, but written just for me.

Much Love,
Lulu
